Benefits of external strobes

External strobes enhance underwater still photography by providing a light source that can be positioned and aimed exactly as you require for the particular shot, which enables creativity with lighting angles, and perhaps more importantly, can often overcome the problem of backscatter that arises when using the camera's own flash.

External strobes are considerably more powerful than most 'on camera' flashes, so can light more area of a wide angle shot, or reach subjects further away. For macro photography, an external strobe overcomes the common problem of shadowing caused by the housing port obstructing the light from the camera's own flash when working close up.

The Ikelite DS125 also features a modelling light which can be switched on for use either as an aiming guide, or as a 'work light' for night dives.

How do they work?

The strobe offered uses a 'manual controller' equipped with a sensor that detects the camera's own flash going off, and triggers the strobe. The manual controller also features controls over the light output of the strobe so you can fine tune the resulting exposure.

A common feature of digital cameras is a 'pre-flash' momentarily before the main flash goes off, which the camera uses to gather exposure information. The Ikelite manual controller can be configured to ignore this pre-flash, so that it triggers with the 'real' flash in synch with the camera's shutter.

Because the manual controller's sensor is outside of the camera housing, there is no need for connections to the camera itself, so the strobe can operate with almost any camera.

Will the strobe work with my own camera?

Almost certainly, yes. If you wish to hire the strobe for use with your own camera we will ensure that the strobe will work with your camera when you pick up the strobe. The dual handle tray features an adapter that allows most housings for compact cameras to be attached.
